Barrett’s esophagus is a condition in which the tissue lining the esophagus—the muscular tube that connects the mouth to the stomach—is replaced by tissue that is similar to the lining of the intestine. This process is called intestinal metaplasia.

No signs or symptoms are associated with Barrett’s esophagus, but it is commonly found in people with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). A small number of people with Barrett’s esophagus develop a rare but often deadly type of cancer of the esophagus.

Thankfully, my lab results came back negative and I did not have Barrett's esophagus!

Years went by of constant heartburn... when the irriation was really bad I would have difficulty swallowing... occasionally, I would have an endoscopy with dilation to stretch strictures in my esophagus...

Years went by taking medications like Zantac, later I found relief with Nexium.

After a while on Nexium its effectiveness seemed to wear off and I was switched to Aciphex, which worked great for awhile... but I was physically dependent on these drugs...

If I missed a “single” dose then my reflux came back like a volcano and my esophagus would be so irritated that I couldn't swallow solid food! I also worried about the side effects of taking PPI drugs for the rest of my life...




My fundoplication surgery went fine and there were no complications. The night of my surgery I could hardly swallow water by the teaspoonful but I was told this was normal.

The next day I still could hardly swallow but again I was assured not to worry. Days went by and then weeks and my swallowing did improve somewhat.

The recovery period after the surgery was difficult for me and I lost about 15 lbs.

I had a post-op endoscopy and barium swallow. I was told everything looked "normal" even though they didn't give my the tablet because I could hardly swallow the barium. There was no reflux or abnormalities noted on my barium swallow.

I was told that my swallowing would improve with time. I was released from care and told there was no obvious problems with my "wrap" or swallowing.

I had to eat slow and be careful swallowing anything dry or tough because my food would get "stuck". I used ranch dressing or gravy to moisten my food which really helped me swallow much easier.

I maintained my weight and was able to enjoy most foods although I had to avoid things like cake, steak, raw carrots or broccoli, cornbread, etc...

And guess what... eventually I was right back depending on my Aciphex to control my heartburn!

I lived this way for about a year... being careful what and how fast I ate and taking Aciphex... then my swallowing began to worsen...

Soon I could hardly swallow and the smallest amount of food would get "stuck".
